Kannur: CPM former Kannur district secretary P Sasi and Thalassery area secretary Karayi Rajan have been questioned by CBI official in connection with the murder of NDF activists Muhammed Fasal in 1996. It was from Thalassery Rest House the leaders were quizzed for hours. CBI had questioned several other local level leaders regarding the incident.
P Sasi who was removed from the post of district secretary following sex allegations against him is now practicing advocate at Thalassery court.
During the investigation CBI has realised that there was high level interference to sabotage the investigation in the case through transferring police officials probing the case and trying to hoodwink the courts. Former left government had went to Supreme court against the high court verdict allowing CBI probe in the case in a petition submitted by Fasal's widow C H Mariyumma. CBI has got information about the attempts made by the local CPM leadership to mislead police during the investigation. The investigation agency is also looking into the statement made by then home minister and CPM leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan soon after the murder that RSS was behind the attack.
The case which was probed by local police was transferred to Crime Branch later due to the alleged pressure from the party. It was then Mariyumma went to court demanding CBI probe.
Muhammed Fasal, an NDF (earlier form of Popular Front of India) activist was hacked to death in the early hours of 22nd October, 2006 a day before Idul Fithr. He was on the way to collect bundles of newspaper to be distributed.
