Kozhikode: Popular Front of India (PFI) has filed defamation cases against a newspaper and two magazines for publishing malicious and defamatory news about the organization. PFI state general secretary P Abdul Hamid has filed cases against India Today, Desabhimani newspaper, its weekly and Keralasabdam.

Adv. P.C. Noushad has filed the cases at the Kozhikode Judicial First Class Magistrate Court. Cases have been filed against India Today editor Prabhu Chawla, managing editor Shankar Aiyar and reporter Saritha S Balan for filing an unsubstantiated report on July 21.

Malayalam newspaper Desabhimani on July 11 filed a report under the headline “PFI collects money through coercion and fake currency notes”. The report said that fake currency notes printed in Pakistan were distributed in India by PFI cadres. The next day the paper carried another report, “PFI’s training in League (IUML) dens”, in which unfounded allegations were levelled against the outfit.

Such baseless news reports, casting aspersions on PFI, were carried by the paper in the next few days. Cases have been filed against Desabhimani printer and publisher E P Jayarajan, editor V V Dakshinamoorthy, D Dileep, M O Vargheese, P Jayarajan MLA and M B Rajesh MP. The reports, appeared on July 18 and August 15, alleged that PFI was anti-democratic and that its cadres had involvement in Marad murder case.

Another defamation suite has been filed against Keralasabdam weekly editor Dr B A Radhakrishnan, reporters M A Ajayan and Noufal Elamkulam for publishing biased and misleading reports linking PFI to Pakistan.

These reports and articles were published following the attack on a college lecturer in Moovathupuzha.

The PFI has submitted before the court that these reports were aimed at tarnishing the image of an outfit committed to the emancipation of the backward classes and human rights protection.
