Press Release / 24 September 2021
New Delhi: Popular Front of India Chairman, O M A Salam, in his latest statement, condemned the police atrocities and killing of unarmed people for protesting forceful eviction in Assam.
“We are deeply shaken by the footages coming out of Assam today. Police is seen opening fire without any warning at thousands of people including women and children. A man who got caught up between police personnel was brutally lynched while even media person is seen joining the brutality. Reports suggest that the actual number of casualties might be far higher. One of the three killed appears to be a minor”- said O M A Salam.
He pointed out that in the past few days, Assam authorities evicted around 4500 poor helpless people from their houses without presenting any rehabilitation plan by accusing them of illegal encroachment. It is while the case filed against the government move is still in the court that around 800 families were thrown on to street in heavy rain and their houses were destroyed.
O M A added that this is the latest chapter in the ethnic hatred that has been fomented against the Bengali speaking Muslims in the state. Communal divisive policies of Assam BJP Govt are the sole reason for escalation of the situation to this point. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was eager to score political points out of ethnic and communal divide.
"This eviction drive is inhuman. Popular Front demands intervention of the judiciary to bring the eviction to immediate halt and ensure the rehabilitation of the people who have already been expelled from their homes. Steps must be taken to adequately compensate the victims of the police firing. Popular Front also demands judicial investigation to the police atrocity and bring the officers responsible for the killing to justice."
