Pegasus Snoopgate NSO Group Technologies is an Israeli technology firm primarily known for its proprietary spyware Pegasus, which is capable of remote zero-click surveillance of smartphones.

New Delhi 27 October 2021 : Popular Front of India Chairman O M A Salam, in a statement, has welcomed the Supreme Court decision to appoint an independent committee to probe into the allegation of the use of Pegasus spyware for unauthorized surveillance.

Salam pointed out that the order by a bench headed by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana is a blow to the autocratic attitude of the Modi government and upholds the constitutionally guaranteed right to privacy. The allegation that more than 40 citizens including opposition leaders, civil rights activists and heads of government agencies were spied on by the government is a matter of serious concern for a democratic society like India. This is a characteristic behaviour of totalitarian regimes that considers citizens and political opponents as potential enemies. The Centre’s reluctance to respond despite having been given several chances by the apex court proves that the allegation holds water. A thorough investigation by an independent technical committee under direct SC monitoring is a reasonable step in the interest of justice. The SC warning that the State cannot get a free pass every time the spectre of ‘national security is raised should be an eye-opener to Modi government against its attempt to narrow democratic space and civil liberties by using national security as a pretext, added O M A Salam.
