Press Release / 22 July 2021,
New Delhi: Delhi court Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Yadav tearing into the Delhi Police investigation of Shiv Vihar's Madina Masjid vandalism case and pulling up police officers in open court for their shoddy probe is a very clear indicator of how partisan and anti-Muslim, the NE-Delhi riot investigations have become, noted Popular Front of India Chairman O M A Salam. The Delhi Police, notorious for its communal bias and anti-Muslim stance had faced severe criticism last year for its ineffective handling of the NE-Delhi riots, as they were found aiding and abetting Hindutva violence against innocent Muslims, Mr Salam reminded.
The court arrived at a prima facie opinion that there was negligence on the part of the Delhi Police, and expressed its pain at the “lackadaisical attitude” shown by the investigation agency, which till now was not even aware that a separate FIR was registered with regards to the Masjid vandalism case. A Delhi court had last week (on July 13, 2021) fined the Delhi Police Rs 25,000 for "miserably failing" to investigate cases related to the February 2020 anti-Muslim pogrom in NE-Delhi. The court had then noted that the Delhi Police conducted the investigation in a “most casual, callous and farcical manner”.
The minority communities in India have been victims to this connivance of the Police forces who often incited and abetted Hindutva violence, falsely implicated innocent victims and then went on to conspire with the Hindutva politicians to save the Hindutva rioters from criminal proceedings. In this context, we appreciate this alertness shown by the courts in Delhi while hearing the cases of NE-Delhi violence. We call upon the judiciary to closely monitor further proceedings in these cases as the Hindutva politicians having close affiliations with the powerful in Delhi are still untouched by the law and order system and are on the way inciting further hate and violence against the minority communities.
