Press Release/ 21 December 2021
New Delhi: Popular Front of India Chairman O M A Salam has taken strong exception with the decision to link Aadhar Card with Voter ID.
The proposal in the recently passed Election Law Amendment Bill of Aadhaar to voter ID raises several serious concerns. The reform goes against the Supreme Court order in 2015 prohibiting the use of Aadhaar for any purpose other than the Public Distribution Scheme and will effectively make Aadhaar mandatory for all citizens. The decision also challenges the fundamental right to privacy of the citizens. More seriously, there is a valid apprehension that those in power will misuse the data to manipulate voter lists by excluding people who they fear would vote against them.
India’s literacy rate as per the last census is only 74 % and so-called digital India is still beyond the reach of the majority of Indians. This process of linking Aadhaar to Voter ID under the pretext of digitalizing the poll process will leave a large section of the country’s marginalized out of the democratic process. Popular Front demands that the centre withdraw the decision immediately.
