Press Release/ 21 December 2021

New Delhi: Popular Front of India of India Chairman O M A Salam has, in a statement, welcomed the resolution unanimously passed by the Nagaland legislative assembly demanding the repeal of the Armed Force Special Provision Act (AFSPA)-1958 from the Northeast. The organization urged the central government to repeal the draconian law from the country.

Special powers granted to the Armed Forces under AFSPA have been the main catalyst for human rights violations in the Northeast region and Kashmir. The provisions of the law allow security forces to open fire on any person on suspicion, and arrest individuals and search premises without warrants, in designated disturbed areas. The Act was misused widely and led to arbitrary killings and detentions of civilians in the last five decades. The recent killing of 14 civilians by the Armed forces in Nagaland is a live example of how the law affected the lives of innocents in the Northeast.

The recommendation for repealing the Act had already been made by Justice Jeevan Reddy Committee in 2005. The Committee had mentioned that AFSPA as "the Act is a symbol of hate, oppression, and instrument of high-handedness”.

Popular Front of India welcomes the Resolution passed by the Nagaland Assembly to repeal AFSPA and urges the central govt to act on the demand made by the state assembly unanimously and scrape the law entirely from the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir.
