NDF (National Development Front)

The turbulent 1980s saw the ugliest designs of the Sangh Parivar to destroy the very fabric of freedom and integrity of the country that many thousands had laid their lives for. Many a riot was engineered through out the country; with Advani’s Rath yatra bringing along unwarranted hatred among the people.  And the 16th century Babri Masjid was destructed by these Hindutwa zealots. It was the era when India was plunged into a state of utter turmoil in terms of fear and insecurity of the minorities, especially the Muslims with bloodshed and ethnic cleansing galore. All the arms of politics and administration were fast being saffronized. The Muslim community was in a state of confusion, sharing a feeling of insecurity and lacking a sense of direction. Independent India was made hostage to the hatred spread by these Hindutva terrorists.

Some among the Muslims in Kerala began to ponder about ways to overcome this crisis they have come forward to take up the challenge of fascism and plan for survival and development. This realization necessitated the birth of the National Development Front in 1993. It was just the start of a movement towards emancipation and empowerment of exploited and deprived classes. Socio-political justice to backward classes and minorities, resistance to the evil designs of communal fascist forces, equal distribution of resources of the nation for a well balanced symmetric development of all parts and all sections of the society are some of the fundamental goals of the organization. The NDF was highly successful in containing and diverting to positive channels the resentment prevailing among the youth.   It inculcates commitment and brings about discipline among the youth, and bars them from doing things at the whim of the moment.  With freedom, justice and security as its pillars, the NDF has brought about a fundamental change in social equations of Kerala. It reminds the people every year that the Babri Masjid is never to be forgotten; rebuilding it is the need of the nation. The accusations that terrorism is a Muslim trait have been continually quashed by the NDF. While many organizations are on the defensive on such accusations, the NDF has exposed the hollowness of the allegation on many occasions.

While some  organizations within the community in Kerala use of their time, money and energy speaking ill about each other, the NDF chooses to sideline those internal difference for the sake of unity and struggle. The times of peril are over, for a new era, with the blessing of Almighty, has begun.

The NDF believes in example rather than precept – thereby, it rightly donned the human rights mantle to bring justice and equality to the deprived. Many such instances were brought to light through the propaganda machinery of the organization.  When the Muslims in spite of living for decades in Assam, Calcutta and Bombay were deprived of the power to cast their vote in 1994; when the draconian black laws liked TADA and  POTA were unscrupulously imposed;  when Janab Abdul Nasser Madani and many other Muslim youth were jailed without bail after the Coimbatore blast ……

It became a key player in the formation of the CHRO – the Confederation of Human Rights Organization in 1997.   A caravan for the protection of reservation rights moved through out the state making the backward classes aware that power sharing is our constitutional right and just a favour. The year  2003 saw the NDF volunteers march towards the residences of all satate government ministers. The NDF was instrumental in the issuing of a package for protecting reservation rights by UDF government in 2006.

Social and community service works undertaken by the organization include blood donation, career and education guidance, relief activities.  The NDF volunteers were in the forefront of disaster relief when some coastal areas of Kerala was by Tsunami waves.

The Freedom Parade on every Independence Day not only reiterates the our tribute to the freedom fighters who laid their souls for freedom, but also warns the anti-national  communal forces that we will defend our freedom with might and resolve any attempt to take away justice and security.

Time and again, it has exposed and effectively campaigned against the Zionist and imperialist designs to sabotage global peace and stability. The illegal execution of Saddam Hussein as per US dictates was widely protested.

The NDF has sailed past various accusations in its 14 years of existence, and we solely place this success on the Almighty, for He has chosen a group that strives for justice - the cadres for humanity.
