Popular Front of India Chairman E. Abubacker in a statement welcomed the Supreme Court ruling that allowed the trial of senior BJP leaders like LK Advani, Murali Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti for the criminal conspiracy in Babri Masjid case. At the same time, he termed the ruling a delayed justice.
It is unfortunate that it took 25 years for a court ruling after the worst organized crime against Indian democracy took place. Most of those who instigated the demolition of Babri Masjid and the anti-Muslim violence that followed managed to come to power and enjoy successful political careers untouched by law. This is a failure that has inflicted irreparable damage to our secular-democratic system. The delay in this case cannot be blamed on our judicial system as there are many cases in which judgement was passed within few years such as the case of the attack on Akshardham temple. It was the lack of political will of the successive governments to prosecute the culprits that has caused the delay. If the culprits of the Babri masjid demolition were punished immediately then the country could have been saved from further communal polarization by the fascist forces. It was the opportunistic and unprincipled stances of the secular parties that helped these criminals get away with their crimes.
Though delayed, the ruling brings hope that we are at least a step closer to justice. It will indeed help restore people’s faith in judiciary.
