The renowned writer, commentator and rights activist Mr. Ram Puniyani was awarded NCHRO’s Mukundan C Menon Award 2015, in a graceful function at Al Karimi Library Hall of Anjuman-E-Islam, CST, Mumbai. The program started at 4.45 pm and the dignitaries that graced the occasion were Mr. Ram Puniyani, Justice Suresh Hosbet (Retired Judge Bombay High Court), Adv. Amin Solkar (Legal Activist), Adv. Shabana Khan (National Vice Chairperson NCHRO), Sadique Qureshi (Social Activist), Mr.
Popular Front Chairman K. M. Shereef expressed deep condolences on the sad and sudden demise of SDPI National Vice President Mr. Samkutty Jacob this morning due to cardiac arrest. Mr. Samkutty Jacob was soft and considerate to all. Nevertheless he was uncompromising in his ideals and political approaches. He was an ardent upholder of the rights of depressed classes. He stood in the forefront of struggles for equal justice to the marginalized sections till his last breath.
The Madras high court sitting judge D. Hari Paranthaman demanded constitutional amendments for the reservation in the higher judiciary, while speaking in the seminar on “Social Justice in the Judicial Appointments” organized by the National Lawyers Network (NLN) at Chennai here on Friday (8th January 2016).
In his key-note address, Justice Hari Paranthaman said, “Our Indian constitution was amended more than hundred times. To ensure the social justice in the higher judiciary, it is need of the hour to amend the constitution.

New Delhi: Human rights activists, lawyers, community leaders and the representatives of civil society meeting under the banner of “People’s Movement Against UAPA” decided to launch various programmes for the repeal of the draconian law.
A team would meet the leaders of all political parties in Bihar, prior to the upcoming election, and would impress upon them the need for the repeal of UAPA, which has already put thousands of people in jails on baseless charges.
It is heart breaking to note that deaths in police custody and prisons are on the increase in different parts of India. The recent fake Encounter of five Persons in Aler, Telangana State and Shaik Hyder in the custody of Nizamabad,Telangana and 20 persons killing in A.P police are indications of this condemnable trend.
